Accessibility
Our aim
Hospitality Circle should work for everyone in the trade, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, magnification, or a phone in a loud room with one hand free. We build to WCAG 2.2 level AA as our target.
What we have done
- Semantic HTML with real landmarks and headings in order, so screen readers and reader modes can navigate the page properly.
- Everything works from the keyboard, and focus is shown with a clear coral outline rather than being hidden.
- Touch targets on phones are at least 44px, including the filter chips and the WhatsApp buttons.
- Text sits on its background at contrast ratios that meet AA. Type on the coral fills is dark ink navy for the same reason.
- Form fields have visible, permanently attached labels, not placeholder text pretending to be a label.
- The site does not rely on colour alone: the "offering" and "looking for" tags carry their own words as well as their own colour.
- No animation, no autoplay, no motion that could trigger discomfort.
- The directory works without the map, and the map is an alternative view of the same list rather than the only way to find anything.
Known limitations
- The map itself is a third-party component. Panning and zooming it with a keyboard works, but reading individual pins is easier in the list view alongside it, which contains exactly the same members.
- Member photography is uploaded by members. We prompt for alternative text but cannot guarantee every member writes something useful.
- The directory needs JavaScript to filter and to draw the map.
